Crews Cleanup Nantucket Streets After Sewer Failure

NANTUCKET – A number of downtown streets on Nantucket have been decontaminated after last week’s major sewer line failure.

Easy Street, Cambridge Street, Oak Street, and Broad Street from South Beach Street to Steamship Wharf have all been cleaned up. Downtown streets in the Core area have been re-opened to regular traffic, with the exception of a portion of South Beach Street.

A small part of the pavement on South Beach Street was removed so National Grid can check out the condition of the main cables that provide electricity to the island.

Officials with the Massachusetts Department of Environmental Protection toured the affected areas with representatives from the town on Thursday. Local and state officials also spoke with the federal Department of Environmental Protection yesterday, who recommended that the single discharge point behind the Nantucket Yacht Club remain in place for the time being.

Water and sewer use remains unaffected, but island residents are still being asked to limit their water use as much as they possibly can.

An independent assessment of what caused the system to fail is now underway.
