NANTUCKET – Crews worked throughout the weekend on Nantucket as they continued making repairs to the island’s sewage system which experienced a catastrophic failure just over a week ago.
Clean Harbors completed surface decontamination at the Steamship Authority property and South Beach Extension Saturday.
They planned to continue work on Monday on the last surface areas on South Beach Street within the effected area.
Utility vaults and conduits will be addressed later this week.
More than 2 million gallons of raw sewage poured into Nantucket Harbor after the system failed.
All downtown streets and parking remain open, with the exception of South Beach Street from Broad Street to Harborview Way, Sea Street and Whaler’s Lane.
South Beach Street Extension is closed from Broad Street to Oak Street.
While water and sewer use remains unaffected, Nantucket residents are still being asked to limit their water use as much as they possibly can.
An independent assessment of what caused the system to fail is now underway.
