Crews Hope to Complete Buzzards Bay Park by End of May

BUZZARDS BAY – Construction crews are working full-time to finish the renovations of Buzzards Bay Park along the Cape Cod Canal.

The park will include a performance pavilion, children’s play area with a splash pad and a memorial grove.

Project Manager Matt Cipriani said they hope to have the park finished by the end of the month.

“Whether or not that is going to happen, I don’t know because weather is a factor,” Cipriani said. “And we lost most of March with the three nor’easters that came through.”

The cold lasting through most of the early spring and a lot of rain also slowed down work crews.

The pavilion has been erected and lighting has been installed. Remaining work includes putting down the rubber coating on the play area, final planting and laying down sod.

“The goal is to build something that everybody’s going to enjoy and everybody’s going to use and it’s going to have other programs besides just a kids playground,” Cipriani said.

Cipriani said that building the park along the canal has been a great experience.

“It’s one of the neatest projects that I have done of this type,” he said. “Typically you do these things in the middle of town near a school and it’s a little different to be by the canal where we are doing this project.”

Residents at last May’s town meeting approved $1.3 million in two funding articles for the park renovations. The money for the project came from Community Preservation funds.
