Cultural Center Director Touts Continued Success to Harwich Selectmen in Annual Report

HARWICH – The Harwich Cultural Center has been a success since it first opened two years ago, and town residents can look forward to continued operations for at least another five years.

In an annual report to Harwich selectmen last month, Cultural Center Director Carolyn Carey proclaimed that most of the rooms are being rented by artists and other users, while staff are preparing more space to be available for rent soon.

“It’s continuing to grow. Thirty-three long term studios have been established at the center, 32 studios are occupied. The last one is one of the portables in the far back. We have 53 occupants with 44 rental agreements. There is a wait list. There are 11 double studios, 16 singles, one triple, and it’s approximately $11,000 a month,” said Carey.

“We are working on the kitchen, that space is what we’re really focusing on now. The one side of the building is up and running and we have the other side really at a good point now.”

Along with the studio rentals, the center offers rent for other areas of the former middle school, including the auditorium, cafeteria, courtyard, art room and gymnasium.

The center has been a success since opening in 2016, with the Harwich Board of Selectmen extending its funding for another five years back in May.

“The programs and events, they’re readily expanding, but that doesn’t mean we don’t have space for more. So this is my plug to the public, if you’re looking for space for an activity or an event and you haven’t been, we have an auditorium, we have a library, we have music room, we have what you need. Come on in,” Carey said.

The center also hosts other community activities, like the walking field trip for six kindergarten classes from Harwich Elementary School or the past concerts held by the Harwich Cranberry Festival at the center.

The Harwich Junior Theater Players also performed for eight weeks over the summer at the center.
