Cummings Wins Barnstable County Sheriff Re-Election Bid

KA_Cummings Sherriff Event_Hyannis_012716_015BARNSTABLE – In his bid for the fourth term, Barnstable County Sheriff Jim Cummings defeated his Democratic opponent Randy Azzato.

Cummings had a decisive victory, winning with over 29,000 votes over Azzato, 76,433 to 46,784.

“There’s two ways to run, scared and unopposed, so that’s how we ran, we ran scared, and it certainly paid off in the end,” said Cummings.

The race was contentious between both campaigns, as Cummings faced a challenger for the first time in his years as Sheriff.

Cummings knows what he wants to focus on in his next term as Sheriff.

“I want to do something relative to mental health, we have many people coming to our correctional facility that have issues with mental health and it doesn’t make for a good place for them when you take somebody suffering from mental health and you put them in an 8×10 cell,” said Cummings.

The race became one of the most contentious and highly charged on Cape Cod, with Azzato making claims of poor trianing among corrections officers and criticizing Cummings for his leadership. Cummings fired back during the campaign, questioning whether Azzato’s resume concerning his employment at the Department of Correction and previous law enforcement jobs was completely truthful.
