Cyr Defends Record After Conservative Advocacy Group Mailers

TRURO – Cape and Islands State Senator Julian Cyr is pushing back against recent mailers sent out to residents in the district.

The Mass Fiscal Alliance, a conservative advocacy group, has been targeting a number of state lawmakers with mailers in recent weeks regarding the 2017 vote that increased pay for Massachusetts elected officials.

The Truro Democrat defended his vote in a statement released by campaign chairman Ed McManus.

“For the first time in 35 years, Julian and his colleagues voted for an increase in compensation for Constitutional Officers, including the Governor, Judges, and Legislators. Julian cast his vote because he believes millionaires shouldn’t be the only ones who can afford to hold state office.”

“It’s important to note that after the vote, Julian continues to make much less than most town managers on the Cape who have salaries between $140,00 and $175,000.”

The Cyr campaign accused the Mass Fiscal Alliance of using “dark money to muddy the water, mislead voters, and advance their own priority of putting money in millionaire’s pockets.”

“They don’t know our communities or care about the people of the Cape and the Islands,” the Cyr campaign added.

The group also sent a mailer out in December criticizing Cyr over immigration issues.

Cyr, who is serving his first term on Beacon Hill, is facing a challenge this year from Republican John Flores, a Barnstable Town Councilor.

The Cape and Islands State Senate district includes the towns from Mashpee to Provincetown, Martha’s Vineyard, and Nantucket.
