BOSTON – Cape & Islands State Senator Julian Cyr, along with over 70 other members of the House and Senate, is lobbying Governor Charlie Baker to approve a $30 million dollar appropriation to shore up the state’s Low Income Energy Assistance Program. (LIHEAP)
The program has seen a reduction in federal funding over the past few years, from a high of $200 million to $125 million this year.
“As the need for fuel assistance is increasing throughout the Commonwealth, state legislators and Governor Baker must work swiftly to make sure that our most vulnerable are protected during these bitter winter months,” said Cyr (D-Truro).
“I am proud to be part of this bi-partisan effort to ensure tens of thousands of seniors, veterans and families with children get the help they need.”
The Low Income Home Energy Assistance Program (LIHEAP) provides eligible households with help in paying a portion of winter heating bills. Eligibility, based on household size and the annual income of every adult household member, provides assistance for electric and gas utility bills, and other heat sources including oil and propane.
The program serves 160,000 households in the state. The lawmakers would like the appropriation included in a future FY19 Supplemental Budget as soon as possible.
