YARMOUTH – The Dennis-Yarmouth Regional School District has contacted Apple after a biology app, which was determined inappropriate, found its way on to student iPads.
Concerned parents brought the program, BioNinja IB, to the attention of the school’s principal, according to School Committee Chairman Brian Carey.
“She agreed with the parents that it was inappropriate,” Carey said. “And within hours that app was removed from every student’s iPad that was in school that day.”
Carey said the app was put on the iPads because of its rating at the apple store.
“It had a 4-plus rating, which determined it was age appropriate for four and older,” Carey said. “And it had a five-star rating as far as people using the app.”
Carey said the district has contacted Apple about the rating but has not heard back from the company.
Although the rating may not accurately reflect the age appropriateness of the app, Carey said the district still needs to do a better job vetting the programs made available to its students.
