D-Y School District Holding Second Children Sexual Abuse Workshop

ThinkstockPhotos-89526248SOUTH YARMOUTH – The second Dennis-Yarmouth Regional School District child sexual abuse workshop will be held Wednesday.

The presentation will focus on abuse prevention through public education and awareness.

The workshop stems from an inappropriate relationship between a Mattacheese Middle School teacher who was investigated for having a sexual relationship with a 16 year old student.

“It’s my hope by bringing this information to families we will prevent people from victimizing children today and prevent children from developing abusive behaviors in the future,” said Carol Woodbury, the Dennis-Yarmouth Regional School District’s superintendent of schools.

Woodbury said the topic is not one that is usually dealt with well in a public setting but needs to be discussed nonetheless.

“I think it is very important that families are armed with the information just as we arm them with information about drugs and alcohol,” Woodbury said.

The workshop will be held at the Station Avenue Elementary School in South Yarmouth from 6:30 to 8 p.m.

The presentations are being sponsored by local organizations including Independence House, Cape Cod Neighborhood Support Coalition and Cape Cod Children’s Place.

The first workshop was held last Wednesday at the Nathaniel H. Wixon Innovation School.
