DA: Looking For Public’s Help to Solve Gruesome Crime in Sandwich

TSHIRT2SANDWICH – Cape & Islands District Attorney Michael O’Keefe has released new details in the discovery of a body found at Town Neck Beach in Sandwich.

The remains were a torso missing the head, both arms and both legs. The victim was wearing a blue T-shirt and black sweat-type pants.

The victim had a three- to four-inch surgical scar on his abdomen unrelated to the murder.

Without the ability to use fingerprints or teeth to help with identifying the body, police are reaching out to the public with one major clue: a blue T-shirt the victim was wearing.

front tshirt02O’Keefe said the remains appear to be an African-American male between 5 feet 10 inches and six feet tall and 220 to 230 pounds.

Police processed the crime scene through the night on Wednesday and Thursday morning and transported the body to the Chief Medical Examiner’s Office for an autopsy, O’Keefe said.

The body and trace evidence found at the crime scene is being processed for DNA, he said.

O’Keefe said that due to the state of the remains, police know the murder is “a fairly recent event.”

O’Keefe said the body was wrapped in a tarp and garbage bags and was transported to the site where it was dumped by a blue dolly. Police are asking if anyone recognizes the dolly or knows that someone is missing a dolly to call Sandwich police or the Cape and Islands District Attorneys office.tshirt5

Police are circulating the photo of the T-shirt the victim was wearing in hopes that someone recognizes it.

“We’re asking people to search their memory and let us know if they observed anything unusual,” O’Keefe said, targeting the time period from Monday to Wednesday evening when the body was found.

Sandwich Police Chief Peter Wack was among the law enforcement personnel to attend a press conference on the investigation on Friday at Barnstable Superior Courthouse. Wack said, he does not believe there are any public safety concerns due to the discovery of the body, but nevertheless, he said, police have increased patrols in the area.

The T-shirt is from a fire protection company called Cranston Windustrial out of Warwick, Rhode Island, which has about 10 employees. Police have interviewed all the company employees in the course of the investigation.

O’Keefe said company personnel have been very cooperative, including estimating that the T-shirt is six to eight years old. The company gives away thousands of T-shirts a year, O’Keefe said.

Anyone who recognizes the T-shirt and may have seen someone who fits the general description wearing it, is asked to call police at 508-790-5799.
