The Wianno Club Junior Activity holds its annual Independence Day parade, traveling down Sea View Avenue on July 3. Among those taking part are Eliza, a 10-year-old "cockalier" (Cavalier King Charles Spaniel/cocker spaniel mix) and Fergus, an eight-year-old Havanese with Steve Toadvine and Mary Baer.

OSTERVILLE – It was all about family in Osterville yesterday for the annual Wianno Club Junior Activity parade celebrating Independence Day.

The parade is traditionally held the day before the big holiday and begins at the Junior Activity camp on Washington Street before heading onto Sea View Avenue past the Wianno Club and back to the camp.

“Hanging out with family” is a highlight of the holiday, said Chip Baird, an Osterville summer resident who dressed in the spirit of Independence Day in American flag shorts.

For Baird, the holiday means “great, great family events and celebrating our country’s history.”

He said he has been attending the parade for seven years and his three children, ages 7, 6, and 4 were all in the parade.

Osterville summer resident Gretchen Cramb was at the event with her daughter, Indigo, 7, who planned to ride her scooter in the parade. She had decorated it with red, white and blue streamers.

“It’s the only holiday where everyone’s outside and it’s festive and family gets together,” Cramb said. “It’s the epitome of summer.”

Among those celebrating the long tradition of the parade was year-round Osterville resident Kelly Crosby, whose husband Ned, a 12-generation Cape Codder, remembers attending the parade since he was young.

“For him, it brings back childhood memories,” Kelly Crosby said.

Her four children were all in the parade.

As to what she likes best about the July 4th holiday, Crosby said, “I love that it gets all the family together to celebrate. The smiles on the kids’ faces are priceless.”
