YARMOUTH PORT – A best-selling author and anti-death penalty activist will be on Cape Cod later this month for a series of events.
Sister Helen Prejean, the author of “Dead Man Walking,” which became an award-winning film starring Sean Penn and Susan Sarandon, will be in Yarmouth Port and Dennis on Monday, May 23.
Sister Helen became an activist against the death penalty after witnessing her first execution more than 30 years ago.
She became a spiritual advisor to convicted murderers sentenced to death, including the man portrayed by Penn in “Dead Man Walking.”
Sister Helen will be the featured speaker at the Annual Meeting and Luncheon of the Cape Cod Fellowship of Reconciliation on May 23 at noon. The event will be held at the Yarmouth Inn on Route 6A and is open to all, but registration is recommended at capecodfor.org.
She will then attend a special screening of “Dead Man Walking” at the Cape Cinema in Dennis later that day at 3 p.m.
Sister Helen will take questions from the audience and discuss her work after the screening.
