Deadline Approaching for Big Fix Applicants

HYANNIS – Time is running out for residents in Centerville and Hyannis to submit applications to receive home repairs during Housing Assistance Corporation’s annual Big Fix-A-Thon.

The Big Fix brings hundreds of volunteers to the homes of seniors, veterans and the disabled to make small home improvements and provide yardwork.

The 10th annual Big Fix returns to Barnstable on October 5 after the community hosted the first event in 2010. This year it will be conducted in the villages of Hyannis and Centerville.

The deadline for eligible homeowners to apply is Friday, June 14.

“We encourage anyone to apply who is a resident of Hyannis or Centerville who maybe has a property that needs some work and they are not able to do it themselves,” said David Quinn, HAC’s Director of Housing Development & Planning.

Quinn encourages Hyannis and Centerville residents to apply even if they are unsure if they qualify.

About 15 homes will be chosen for projects.

“Typically we get more applications than that and we do our best to meet the needs of everyone who applies,” Quinn said. “We usually cap it at 15 just based on the number of volunteers we can get and the number of projects we can do in one day.”

Quinn said it is a big event to coordinate, including the logistics of getting volunteers in place.

“Once we get applications we’ll take time to review every application and actually go out and visit the homes of people who have applied,” Quinn said.

HAC staff looks at what projects and repairs the homes need.

Quinn said they will look for skilled contractors to help out for more complicated projects.

Applications can be found online at haconcapecod.org, HAC’s Hyannis office, Barnstable Town Hall, the Barnstable Senior Center, and town libraries. They can also be found at the Greater Hyannis Chamber of Commerce, Cape Cod Chamber of Commerce, Veterans Services Department in Hyannis, and Elder Services of Cape Cod & the Islands in South Dennis.

Individuals interested can also call Housing Assistance Corporation at 508-771-5400.

Individuals interested in volunteering on the day of the event can apply at haconcapecod.org.
