Two Democrats Vying to Take on Whelan in 1st District

DENNIS – The two Democrats running for the First Barnstable State Representative District highlighted not only their own differences, but also took aim at incumbent republican Tim Whelan at a recent debate in Dennis.

Joshua Mason and Steven Leibowitz were hosted by the Cape Cod Community Media Center for the televised debate which included questions from the audience on a range of issues.

Among the topics addressed were wastewater, alternative energy, housing, the region’s opioid crisis, and the local economy.

For his part, Leibowitz – a former Brewster School Committee Member – criticized what he deemed to be Whelan’s lack of attention toward education or the environment.

Mason, a first time candidate, took the critique a step further arguing that Whelan’s focus on law enforcement issues have distracted from the district’s greater issues.

The forum was sponsored by the Cape and Islands Democratic Council, along with the Democratic Town Committees of Barnstable, Brewster, Dennis, and Yarmouth.

Election Day in this, and other primary races, is Tuesday.
