WOODS HOLE – Demolition began yesterday on the Steamship Authority’s Woods Hole ferry terminal. The process is a major step forward in the Authority’s years-long effort to construct a new facility at the site to replace the more than 60-year-old building.

The demolition itself is expected to take two to three days followed by several weeks of debris removal. The Building has been used as the Steamship Authority’s main terminal since 1961.

Ferry operations are expected to continue as normal during both the demolition and the construction of a new terminal from a temporary structure located at the same Cowdry Road location.

The Authority’s board of governors awarded a $43 million contract to Quincy-based Jay Cashman Inc. to build three ferry slips, two passenger loading piers and improving stormwater management.

Steamship Authority General Manager Bob Davis says the first phase of the work will run through mid-May.

“Cashman will be working on relocating the passenger gangway system in between what is currently slips 1 and 2, and then putting in some temporary fendering systems,” Davis said.

Construction for the project will only take place only during the offseason from mid-September to mid-May of each year.

“It’s going to take four years of construction,” Davis said.

Cashman made the lowest bid out of the seven made between last September and November.

Major work for the first phase of the marina portion of the project will begin after the demolition, which is part of another construction contract with another contractor.

The entire reconstruction project is expected to be completed in the spring of 2022, including the construction of the new terminal building.
