DENNIS – Selectmen will decide Tuesday whether to put a plan to construct a senior and community center on the upcoming October 27th special town meeting warrant.
If the $12.8 million dollar plan does not make it onto the fall warrant, it may be postponed until the annual spring town meeting.
The plan is to construct a 50,000-square-foot building on the site of the existing senior center on Route 134. It would include a full commercial kitchen, a variety of multipurpose activity rooms and an indoor swimming pool and gymnasium, according to Building Committee Chairperson Gary Barber.
“We can move things around; many of the big meeting rooms are divided with petition dividers so we can make smaller rooms out of them,” Barber said of the initial plans.
Some of the rooms could be used for retired teachers to tutor schoolchildren, Barber said.
An overview given at the last selectman’s meeting predicted a yearly operations cost of $366,000 dollars, and Barber said the cost will be covered with a debt exclusion which needs a two-thirds majority vote at town meeting and a ballot vote to pass.
There are no final plans, and Barber said he’s already caught some developmental drawbacks. He said the Building Committee hopes for grants to pay for facility equipment.
“I feel it is very hard to get money for a project which is not yet committed to,” he said.
