Dennis Receives More than $2.6M in Funding in July

DENNIS – The legislative session came to an end at the end of July and several projects in Dennis have been chosen to receive state support and grant funding.

An amendment to the Environmental Bond Bill included $1 million for the dredging of Sesuit Harbor.

The town also received more than $1.6 million in grant funding for projects that include coastal resiliency planning, housing rehabilitation, a regional glass recycling depot, rail trail safety improvements and firefighting equipment.

On Thursday, July 19, 2018 in Brewster, it was announced that the Town of Dennis was awarded a Recreational Trail Projects grant in the amount of $99,105. These funds will be used for the implementation of bike and pedestrian safety improvements for the Cape Cod Rail Trail at the crossing with South Gages Way. The project will provide increased sightlines to the crossing and pedestrian activated beacons to signal drivers to the use of the crosswalk.

Senator Elizabeth Warren, Senator Edward Markey, Representative Richard Neal, Representative Mike Capuano, Representative Stephen Lynch, and Representative Niki Tsongas announced on Tuesday, July 24, 2018 that the Town of Dennis received $521,274 in grant funding from the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) through the Assistance to Firefighter Grants program (AFG). The Dennis Fire Department will use these funds to purchase firefighter protective gear and communications equipment. 

On Wednesday, July 25, 2018, the Baker-Polito Administration announced that the Town of Dennis will be receiving $120,500 in Sustainable Materials Recover Program (SMRP) grant funding. This grant program is overseen by the Massachusetts Department of Environmental Protection (DEP). Denniswas awarded these funds to support the development of a regional glass processing facility on the Cape, an initiative spearheaded by the Solid Waste and Recycling Committee and Department of Public Works staff.

At the Statehouse on Thursday, July 26, 2018, the Baker-Polito Administration announced the 2018 Community Development Block Grants. Governor Charlie Baker, Lt. Governor Karen Polito, Housing and Economic Development Secretary Jay Ash, Housing and Community Development Undersecretary Janelle Chan were in attendance to present the awards to the 59 communities in the Commonwealth. The Town of Dennis received $825,000 in CDBG funding for housing rehabilitation program assistance for 15 housing units, housing authority modernization, planning for TownHall accessibility, and for providing support to a food pantry.

On Wednesday, August 1, 2018, the Baker-Polito Administration announced that the Town of Dennis will be receiving $101,603 for a Coastal Resilience grants, provided by the Executive Office of Energy and Environmental Affairs Office of Coastal Zone Management (CZM), Improving the Coastal Resiliency of Dr. Bottero Road and Chapin Beach: Coastal Structure and Beach Nourishment Final Design.  The Town of Dennis will finalize engineering plans and permit documents for a project that will stabilize an eroding section of Chapin Beach using added sand and a coastal structure to hold the sand in place. The project will mitigate impacts to Dr. Bottero Road while preserving shorebird habitat and salt marsh and maintaining access to Chapin Beach and the Aquacultural Research Corporation.

Additionally, the Town was notified that under an amendment filed by State Representative Tim Whelan to the Environmental Bond Bill, $1 million dollars for the Town of Dennis, along with the Towns of Harwich and Yarmouth was included in the final conference committee report towards the DHY Clean Waters Community Partnership. These funds will be utilized to fund initial design and engineering mitigation for wastewater planning in the three towns. Under a separate amendment filed by State Representative Tim Whelan to the Economic Development Bond Bill, $1 million dollars for the Town of Dennis was included in the final conference committee report towards the dredging of Sesuit Harbor.
