DENNIS – Dennis Selectmen have approved aquaculture licenses for five shell fishermen, opening up Sesuit Harbor for oyster seeding.
The new licenses are approved for three years.
Selectmen considered five-year licenses, but wanted to see how the new operation works out.
The oysters will be moved to Crowe’s Pasture once they reach a certain size.
“It gives the opportunity of the growers to purchase smaller seed at greater quantities for a less expense,” said Shellfish Constable Chris Southwood.
The fishermen already have five-year licenses for Crowe’s Pasture.
They will be charged $25 per acre and will pay for electric and water use.
They will also have to drop nets off the docks at first to test out the new plan.
“Nothing marketable is ever going to be grown in Sesuit, this is just giving them the opportunity to grow smaller stuff before they can put it in the cages at Crowe’s,” said Southwood.
