DENNIS – Dennis town officials are currently debating how many new monitors to hire that will be tasked with patrolling beaches this coming summer season.
The discussion stems from an incident last summer in which four teenagers were arrested for having sex on the public beach.
The selectmen’s final decision was to remain with six monitors with a price tag of $149,000 for new patrols and monitors.
They initially wanted eight monitors, but the Dennis Finance Committee was only suggesting three, pointing out that no other town on the Cape using monitors in that manner.
A group formed after the incident last year wanted 20 monitors spread out across all of Dennis’ beaches.
Selectman Paul McCormack said six monitors would satisfy the board’s desire, and those of the general public.
“And I think when we saw the level of outcry at those meetings last summer and in the fall, it’s certainly a different room here tonight than it was back then. We can’t forget that,” said McCormack.
Sheryl McMahon noted that Dennis now has some of the highest beach fees on Cape Cod, but feels they’re warranted because Dennis has some of the area’s best beaches.
Approval of the money for the new monitors and additional police patrols is still needed at the spring town meeting.
