SANDWICH – Last week’s fire at a waste collection building in Sandwich sent smoke and other pollutants into the air, the large metal structure housed construction debris.
As a precaution the state Department of Environmental Protection was called in to check the area, said spokesman Ed Coletta, the fire broke out at 295 Service Road Thursday morning.
The 20, 000 square foot building is owned by New Bedford Waste Services.
Coletta said the agency conducted operations from a mobile testing vehicle brought in to check for pollutants.
Volatile organic compounds were found in the immediate area of the four alarm blaze but didn’t significantly affect areas beyond that.
Coletta went on to say that testing of the runoff water from fighting the fire didn’t result in the detection of any pollutants.
The DEP remains on site overseeing cleanup efforts.
