BOSTON – The U.S. Department of the Interior auctioned an area of ocean about the size of Rhode Island for offshore wind development.
The area auctioned, which was the largest competitive lease sale ever in the Unite States, is off the Commonwealth’s South Coast.
The area is believed to be large enough to house enough wind turbines to power 1.4 million homes.
The land sale triples the total area available in the U.S. for commercial offshore wind development.
