BARNSTABLE – The Fall River Diocese 2016 Catholic Charities Appeal is winding down and donations are being accepted through the end of the month.

Funds collected through the Catholic Charities Appeal support programs, agencies and ministries sponsored by the diocese to respond to those in need of spiritual and material assistance.

The Fall River Diocese oversees all Catholic Churches on the Cape and Islands.

“The work of the parishes in soliciting parishioners and businesses in the local community for the poor in Southeastern Massachusetts, Cape Cod and the Islands is the heart of the appeal,” said Jim Campbell, the director of development for the Fall River Diocese. “I am amazed by the energy and zeal of so many volunteers in each parish.”

The appeal, which is in its 75th anniversary year, was started by Bishop James Cassidy in 1942 as a way for the diocese to respond with charity to those in need during World War II.

“We firmly believe that we can continue to improve the quality of life in our community by providing for those who look to us for assistance during their time of need,” said Bishop Edgar da Cunha in a letter to parishioners.

The assistance is given without regard to race, creed, nationality, gender or economic status.

Donations to the appeal can be sent to Appeal Headquarters at P.O. Box 1470, Fall River, MA 02722, dropped off at any parish in the diocese or made online at frdioc-catholiccharities.org.

The progress of the 2016 appeal can be tracked at the website. So far this year over $3.5 million has been raised. Over $4.5 million were raised last year.

The deadline to donate is June 30.
