People run into the water at the Provincetown Polar Bear Plunge
COTUIT – Temperatures in the single digits and wind chills well below zero didn’t deter dozens of people from taking part in Polar Plunges on New Year’s Day.
In Cotuit, the Polar Bear Club’s “Freezin’ for a Reason” went on as scheduled. This year’s event raised money for Mike Pimental of Sandwich, who is battling renal cell carcinoma.
At Loop Beach in Cotuit, a bunch of brave people jumped into the water for a brief few seconds before running back to the safety of blankets and warm cars.

“Cold, tingly, refreshing,” is how Paul Bradley of Maryland described the water as he was grabbing for a towel.
Mary Alice Moynihan of Sandwich said it was worth braving the cold to help Pimental.
“The suffering he’s had – to do this – is nothing compared to him. He’s the greatest person on the face of the planet. We’d do anything to help him out,” said Moynihan.
While the Polar Plunge in Provincetown was technically cancelled, several people jumped into the water anyway to celebrate New Year’s Day.
Plunges in Yarmouth and Barnstable Village were postponed to later dates.
