BARNSTABLE – Dozens gathered at Sandy Neck Beach Monday afternoon for the 6th annual release of diamondback terrapin turtles back into the wild.

The event, hosted by the town of Barnstable’s marine environmental affairs division, featured a discussion about the program and a question and answer period with attendees.

“Diamondback Terrapin turtles are really cool animals,” said Barnstable Natural Resource Officer Sean Kortis.

“They are the only species of turtle that have adapted to live in brackish water which is where fresh water and salt water mix in different estuaries like the salt marshes up here in the north,” he said.

After the talk, Officer Kortis walked everyone roughly 15 minutes down the marsh trail to the site where the terrapins were released back into the wild.

Diamondback terrapins are coastal turtles that can be found from Cape Cod down to Florida and across the gulf coast to Texas.
