Dr. Beach Lists Coast Guard Beach in Eastham in Top 10 Best in Country

KA_Eastham_Nauset Light Stair Damage_Below_Beach Level_Sun_Coast Guard Beach_021916_063EASTHAM – Coastal expert Dr. Stephen Leatherman, also known as Dr. Beach, has named Coast Guard Beach in Eastham as one of the top 10 beaches in the country in 2016.

Coast Guard Beach was named as the fifth best beach on the list, up from the seventh spot last year.

“Clean water and clean sand, if you don’t have that, you don’t have anything,” said Leatherman. “Cape Cod stands out perfectly in that area.”

The beach is accessible by bicycle or shuttle bus from the Salt Pond Visitor’s Center and the sand has been described as fairly coarse so that the beach slopes steeply into the water.

The old Coast Guard station sits atop the glacial bluffs, allowing for a view down upon the Nauset Spit barrier system and bay.

The water in the summer at the beach reaches only about 60-70 degrees.

“On a good, warm day it’s probably about 65 degrees,” said Leatherman. “I’ve been swimming there many times, and on a hot summer day it feels pretty good, you just don’t stay in for hours.”

Beaches in Florida, Hawaii and North Carolina were rated above Coast Guard Beach on the list.
