Dredging Project Proposed At Dead Neck

cape cod genericBARNSTABLE – A dredging project to move sand on Dead Neck and Sampson’s Island will be a topic of discussion before the Barnstable Conservation Commission next week.

Officials with the 3 Bays Preservation and Mass Audubon are hoping to restore nesting shorebird habitats as well as increase flood protection for the island.

“We’ve looked at just about everything there is to, and we think we’ve come forward with a good proposal that will address all of these issues in a reasonable manner,” said Lindsay Councell, the President of the 3 Bays Preservation.

The proposal calls for dredging at the Cotuit entrance channel.

“Through all of a scientific study of waves and currants that we’ve done and the analysis of the erosion rates of the island, we know that we lose about 12,000 yards of sand every year,” Councell added.

The meeting is next Tuesday.
