FALMOUTH – Members of law enforcement are calling for the assault on officers to come to an end.
Since April, four Massachusetts police officers have been shot, two fatally.
Yarmouth Police Sgt. Sean Gannon was fatally shot in April while serving a warrant in Marstons Mills.
The suspect was well-known to law enforcement with more than 100 entries on his criminal record.
Weymouth Police Sgt. Michael Chesna was shot and killed earlier this month while responding to a motor vehicle altercation.
And on Friday, Falmouth Police Officers Don DeMiranda and Ryan Moore were shot while responding to a disturbance. Both are recovering from their injuries.
On Tuesday, Falmouth Police Chief Edward Dunne said the open season and lack of respect of police officers has to end.
“I don’t know where it all came from, but over the last couple months there is no respect for the uniform anymore.” said Dunne.
“These officers including Sergeant Gannon and Sergeant Chesna. My officers the other night they were there to do their job.”
DeMiranda was shot in the chest, but the bullet was stopped by his vest. A second round hit him in the shoulder area. He underwent surgery on Monday.
Officer Ryan Moore was struck in the neck area causing a grazing wound. He was treated and released Friday night.
“In my mind, hearing that two of my officers were shot…one is too many, two if horrific. People have to start respecting what we do and we’re doing our job when we’re out there,” Dunne said.
Officers encountered the suspect, Malik Koval, breaking bottles in the street. As they tried to engage him he became agitated, and ran into the home at 2 Ashley Drive.
Koval will be arraigned from his hospital bed in Boston today.
