D-Y School District Could See Additional State Funding

SOUTH YARMOUTH – The Dennis-Yarmouth Regional School District could be receiving more state aid as the district is still without an operating budget.

The Senate budget adds an extra $216,997 to the budget already proposed by Governor Charlie Baker’s office and the House. Assistant Superintendent Ken Jenks says the Senate’s version of the budget would also increase the minimum amount both towns have to pay for the education system.

The district would certainly benefit from the extra cash flow as an operating budget has yet to be secured for fiscal year 2020.

In Dennis, a proposed $62 million school budget failed in town meeting. That same meeting, $16,490,000 was approved for education spending under the regional agreement.

The deadline for a new budget to be adopted by the school committee is Friday. On Monday, the school committee unanimously voted to extend the deadline to June 28.

“Since the budget failed in Dennis on the seventh of May, the seventh of June will be thirty days. However, we can request from the commissioner an extra 15 days to reconsider our budget and that would take us to about June 28,” Dr. Carol Woodbury said.

Both Dennis and Yarmouth will have 45 days to bring a new assessment before town voters after the school committee adopts a new budget. If voters do not pass that measure, the state requires a district wide meeting to be held with a simple majority vote to decide the budget and assessments.
