Eastham Fire and Police Team to Provide Free Bike Helmets for Kids

HelmetEASTHAM – A bicycle helmet drive for families in need will be held this summer in Eastham.

Year-round school age children in Eastham without a bike helmet or one that doesn’t fit properly can visit the police department or fire station to get a coupon for a free helmet.

The “Eastham Rides Safe” program is sponsored by the Eastham Firemen’s Association, the Eastham Permanent Firefighters Local 2975 and the Eastham Police Union.

The coupons for free helmets can be redeemed at Idle Times Bike Shop or Little Capistrano Bike Shop who have teamed with the public service organizations for the program.

Trained professionals at either shop will make sure each child is given a properly fitted helmet that meets or exceeds current safety standards.

Children whose helmets fit poorly are at twice the risk of head injury in a crash compared with children whose helmet fit is excellent, according to the website for Safe Kids International.

“Many families in our community, while seeing the need for safe riding practices, simply may not have the available funds to provide the proper equipment for their children,” said Eastham Firefighter/Paramedic and Program Coordinator Ryan Van Buskirk. “As public servants, this is where we can help.”
