EASTHAM–An update to the Wiley Park playground was pitched to the Eastham Select Board last week.
The Recreation Commission would apply for $350,000 of funds from the Community Preservation Act, according to Town Planner Paul Lagg.
“A lot of the equipment has come to the end of its useful life,” Lagg explained.
“So, we’re looking to replace some of the equipment, but also re-use and adapt some of the equipment that’s still in pretty good use; make the most of what’s there.”
Notably, the design would make the playground ADA compliant. Pieces of the playground’s equipment would be replaced or remodeled to cater to those with disabilities. New fencing around the playground’s perimeter, along with a new boardwalk and picnic area and the restriping of segments of the parking lot, were also included in the plans.
Lagg believes this plan fits in with Eastham’s five-year strategic plan.
“One of the goals is to enhance recreation opportunities for all users and all age groups,” Lagg continued, “and I think this project does do that very well.”
This would be the first major change to the playground since it was built in 1984.
Any changes to the playground would have to be approved at town meeting in March. From there, renovations would not begin until after that summer, as the playground gets popular during those months.
