BARNSTABLE – Cape Cod homeowners are encouraged to have a home radon test this winter. The tests are being offered by Elder Services of Cape Cod.
The agency’s RSVP Senior Environmental Corps Volunteer Program is conducting the testing, with guidance from the Department of Public Health.
Testing runs now until March 31.
Program Director Susan Schneider said there are many myths about radon.
Some people think because of the Cape’s sandy soil that radon is not an issue. “That’s not true. In fact, studies have shown that approximately three to four houses in five do have a radon test that comes back higher than four,” she said.
Testing is usually done in the basement and ideally should be done in homes closed up for the winter.
Schneider said people may have their homes tested for a number of reasons. “We weren’t sure if the market was saturated this year and we were wondering whether we should do it or not. But we decided to put it out there. As homes either turn over or just people interested in selling their home or somebody just wanting to make sure the environment is safe. There are many reasons to have it done,” she said.
The test is $30, including a confidential lab report and those interested can call Elder Services of Cape Cod and the Islands.
Testing runs from now to March 31.
