Election 2018: Cape Cod Votes

HYANNIS – Cape Cod voters have several choices to make Tuesday in the November mid-term election.

There are contested races for state representative, state senate, Barnstable County commissioner and several statewide races.

In the First Barnstable State Representative District, Republican Tim Whelan is facing a challenge from Democrat Steve Leibowitz.

Second Barnstable Republican incumbent Will Crocker is running against Democratic challenger Paul Cusack.

On the Upper Cape, Republican incumbent Randy Hunt is looking to fend off a challenge from Democrat Jack Stanton in the Fifth Barnstable district.

Both state senate seats on the Cape and Islands are contested this year.

In the Plymouth-Barnstable district, Democratic challenger Deb Rudolph is looking to unseat Republican incumbent Vinny deMacedo.

Cape and Islands State Senator Julian Cyr, a Democrat, is challenged by Republican John Flores.

Barnstable County Commissioner Leo Cakounes is running against challenger Ron Bergstrom.

There are also several contested Assembly of Delegates seats on Cape Cod.

In the Ninth Congressional District, incumbent Democrat William Keating is being challenged by Republican Peter Tedeschi.

Four Barnstable County Assembly of Delegates seats are contested this year. In Harwich, Elizabeth Harder and Peter Hughes are on the ballot. Mary Chaffee and Madhavi Venkatesan are running Brewster, while Joe Glynn is challenging Suzanne McAuliffe in Yarmouth.

In Sandwich, James Killion and Matthew Cubetus are on the ballot for Assembly of Delegates.

Statewide, voters are making a decision in the U.S. Senate race that became contentious in the final months.

Democrat incumbent Senator Elizabeth Warren is running against Republican challenger Geoff Diehl, a state representative from Whitman.

Diehl has been trying to connect with voters that Warren is really a candidate for president in 2020 and won’t have the best interests of Massachusetts in mind.

Warren has said Diehl will be in lockstep with President Donald Trump and she needs to return to Washington D.C. to put a check on the President’s policies.

Incumbent Republican Gov. Charlie Baker faces a challenge from Democrat Jay Gonzalez. All polls have Baker ahead by a wide margin.

Voters will also decide on 3 ballot questions, including Question 1, which deals with nurse to patient staffing ratios. Other questions deal with the way political races are funded and gender discrimination.

For attorney general, Democrat incumbent A.G. is running against Demcrat Jay McMahon, a Buzzards Bay attorney.

Secretary of State William Galvin, a Democrat, is challenged by Republican Anthony Amore and Green-Rainbow candidate Juan Sanchez.

In the race for state treasurer, incumbent Democrat Deb Goldberg is running against Republicans Keiko Orrall and Green-Rainbow candidate Jamie Guerin.

Incumbent Democratic State Auditor Suzanne Bump is facing challenges from Republican Helen Brady, Libertarian Daniel Fishman and Green-Rainbow candidate Edward Stamas.

There are several elected officials running uncontested this year. They include Democraatic Fourth Barnstable State Representative Sarah Peake, Republican Third Barnstable State Representative David Vieira and Democratic Barnstable/Dukes/Nantucket State Representative Dylan Fernandes.

Republican Cape and Islands District Attorney Michael O’Keefe also has no opponent.
