Election Update: Cakounes Concedes County Commissioner Race

Leo Cakounes

HYANNIS – The race for Barnstable County Commissioner was decided early Wednesday by a slim margin.

In the end, incumbent Republican Barnstable County Commissioner Leo Cakounes of Harwich was defeated by Democratic challenger Ron Bergstrom of Chatham.

As results were coming in Tuesday night, the lead switched several times between the two candidates.

It was three Outer Cape towns, Truro, Wellfleet and Provincetown, that came in after midnight that finally sealed the win for Bergstrom.

With the final margin fewer than 400 votes, Cakounes waited until Wednesday afternoon to formally concede the race.

More than 110,000 votes were cast between the two candidates.

Bergstrom is a long-time member of the Barnstable County Assembly of Delegates.

Cakounes said Wednesday that if he eventually lost the race, he would assist Bergstrom with an orderly transition into the office.

Bergstrom said he was grateful the final towns that appeared to put him over the top gave him a big plurality.
