BARNSTABLE – The Town of Barnstable has implemented a beach closure in Hyannis Port due to elevated levels of Cyanobacteria.
Schoolhouse Beach was closed on Monday because toxic algae reached an unacceptable level in the pond. No re-opening date has been announced.
The condition means people who go in the pond could be exposed to moderate to severe health risks. There is also a higher health risk for pets.
The town has also issued advisories for Lovell’s Pond, Long Pond, and No-Bottom Pond. Officials will continue to monitor the algae to see if it builds and say it currently presents a low to minimal risk to people, with a higher risk for pets.
