DENNIS – An outdoor entertainment license for the Sesuit Harbor Café was approved by Dennis selectmen last month.
The new license will allow up to eight special events, such as weddings and fundraisers, to be held under a tent in May, June, September and October with the condition that the tents have noise deadening curtains.
Attorney Jay Murphy, representing café owner John Cuchetti, clarified what he said was “a lot of confusion” that the license was going to be for entertainment every day, “This is a proposal to license the functions only that occur at the café, maximum of eight a year,” he said.
The business previously obtained one-day licenses for the special functions but the building commissioner determined that under revisions made in 2014, functions were not included and that a special permit for the building was required if there are more than two functions a year, according to Murphy.
Eli Whitney, who lives across the harbor from the café in Quivet Neck, said there had been no consideration for her neighborhood, which hears noise from the café and the boat traffic, “Events are outside, there is no way to contain the noise or the partying, the events are usually on weekends when most people are home from a hard week at work and just want to enjoy some peace and quiet.”
She also noted potential problems with traffic, crowd control, littering and people falling into the water, “There are no barriers at the harbor,” she said.
Cuchetti said he is trying to keep the functions as quiet as possible and if they get to loud he or his son would tamp it down.
He also encouraged neighbors to come to him with any concerns.
The café will be closed when outside functions are being held.
In the final vote for the licensing permit selectmen voted four to one in favor of the permit.
