Erosion Dominated Concerns at National Seashore in 2015

EASTHAM – One of the most dramatic issues that faced the Cape Cod National Seashore in 2015 was the destruction of large sections of the Herring Cove Beach parking lot in Provincetown.

Superintendent George Price delivered his annual State of the Seashore late last year at the Salt Pond Visitor Center in Eastham.

Price said the good news when it comes to the 2015 parking lot damage is that the National Park Service has committed to a permanent solution that will move parking lot away from the water, creating a larger and wider beach.

A section of the Herring Cove parking lot was damage again by a storm last week.

In other 2015 National Seashore news, almost 9,000 students took part in their curriculum based programs in 2015. The Friends of the Cape Cod National Seashore provided $100,000 for the rehabilitation of the Captain Penniman House.

Officials also worked on reducing bike accidents within the National Seashore, educating beachgoers about great white sharks in nearby waters and working on fire management by reducing potential fuel sources.

Price said they will continue looking for funding options to restore the Red Maple Swamp Trail in 2016.
