HYANNIS – Cape and Islands District Attorney Michael O’Keefe is sponsoring a one day training seminar on ethical considerations in trying criminal cases for prosecutors and defense attorneys.
The move comes after Assistant District Attorney Laura Marshard, the office’s prosecutor on Martha’s Vineyard, was suspended by the Board of Bar Overseers for misconduct during a recent prosecution.
Marshard met with a defendant without his lawyer present, the Board held that was inappropriate conduct and suspended her for 30 days, that finding is now under review by the Supreme Judicial Court.
The seminar will cover conflicts, discovery, witness preparation, ex parte communication and other topics and will take place at the Hyannis Resort and Conference Center June 14th.
In a release, O’Keefe says the idea for the training came after “The recent experience of a member of my staff with the Board of Bar Overseers.”
Featured speakers are Tigran Eldred, a Professor at New England Law/Boston, and Judy Zeprun Kalman, General Counsel and Director of the AG Institute at the Massachusetts Attorney General’s Office.
The date coincides with a Judicial Conference, so court schedules are light.
