WELLFLEET – Eversource and Mass Audubon have installed two electric vehicle charging stations in Wellfleet, one at the Bay Wildlife Sanctuary, and the other at the Mass Audubon site.
The charging station at the Wildlife Sanctuary is one of seven EV charging stations either installed or in construction at the conservation nonprofit’s statewide network wildlife sanctuaries.
“If we’re going to advance adoption of electric vehicles in the commonwealth it’s going to require a large deployment of charging stations that are publicly accessible,” said Program Lead for EV infrastructure at Eversource, James Cater.
“Programs like the one we are running right now are extremely important and in fact are necessary to reach those high goals in EV adoption that we hope to see in the next few years.”
The collaboration demonstrates a strong commitment to helping communities reduce greenhouse gas emissions.
“In Massachusetts, more than 40 percent of greenhouse gas emissions come from the transportation sector,” said Eversource Senior Vice President and Chief Customer Officer Pennie Conner.
“That’s why we’re actively working with municipalities and companies to make EV charging stations more accessible, our partnership with Mass Audubon is a perfect example of how we’re collaborating in the communities we serve to help address climate change.”
Mass Audubon was an early participant in Eversource’s EV charging station program.
The energy company covers all electrical infrastructure costs needed to install the charging stations and manage the process from start to finish.
Participants only have to purchase and install the charging equipment.
“Since 2003, Mass Audubon has reduced its annual carbon emissions from buildings and vehicles by almost 50 percent,” said Mass Audubon vice President for Operations Bancroft Poor.
“As Massachusetts’ largest nature conservation nonprofit, we believe that working with Eversource to expand EV charging access demonstrates our commitment to reducing our carbon footprint and creating a clean environment, we’re proud to offer visitors electric vehicle charging options.”
Other installed EV charging stations are located at Moose Hill Wildlife Sanctuary in Sharon and the Mass Audubon headquarters in Lincoln.
The remaining four charging stations in construction are located at sanctuaries, including: Broadmoor, Natick; Boston Nature Center, Mattapan; Drumlin Farm, Lincoln; and North River, Marshfield.
