HYANNIS – This year in Eastern Massachusetts, Eversource is investing $37 million in tree trimming and hazardous tree removal along more than 2,100 miles of overhead lines to enhance reliability for customers throughout the state.
Eversource crews are trimming year-round, but are asking property owners to help protect the electric system by maintaining the health of their trees.
Spokesman Mike Durand says that the region has been through a number of issues that have been affecting trees lately.
“We’ve gone from sustained drought conditions in New England, followed by average rainfall that is way above what we would normally get and also combined with insect infestation,” said Durand.
This includes keeping branches away from the lower-voltage service wires connecting their homes or businesses to the main utility lines on the street.
The utility company strongly recommends contacting a professional tree service to perform the work.
“As a company, we’re continuing the pruning work that we do that’s so important on the roadways but we’re also focusing on hazardous trees, what can cause a problem that should be removed before it does,” said Durand.
Eversource also recommends homeowners call a certified arborist to help identify any trees that are showing signs of stress, which may include thinning of the crown, loss of foliage and the presence of mushrooms near the base of the tree.
