Eversource Customers to see Cheaper Winter Electric Bills

EversourceBARNSTABLE – Temperatures are about to start falling across the region as winter approaches and some residents on Cape Cod could see lower electric bills.

Eversource Energy, which supplies basic electric service for 23,000 Cape Cod customers, has filed electricity prices from power suppliers that are 8 percent lower than last winter.

The new supply rate would be 9.996 cents per kilowatt-hour which is decrease from 10.844 cents last winter

The average customer, who uses 600 kilwatt-hours of electricity each month, on Cape Cod, the South Shore and Greater New Bedford would save over $4 per month. The average monthly bill will be reduced from $142.22 last winter to $137.14.

“It is a modest decrease but given what we’ve seen supply prices do over the last couple of years, particularly the winter of 2014-15, any decrease is a good decrease,” Durand said. “And we are happy to be able to pass that along.”

If approved, the new supply rate would take effect January 1 and be in effect for 6 months, or through the end of June. A new 6 month rate will go into effect on July 1.

“Much of what we are seeing on the supply side of the bill, which is what we are announcing right now, is being driven by the cost of natural gas,” Durand said. “More and more in New England, generating companies that produce electricity are relying on natural gas.”
