Eversource Issues Tips on Staying Cool and Saving Energy

Air Conditioner

HYANNIS – As the heat and humidity continue to occur on the Cape this summer, demand for electricity is at its highest.

Eversource has a number of tips for customers on how to stay cool while also saving energy.

Those include increasing the temperature on air conditioners, keeping air conditioner filters and coils clean, using air conditioners and fans together to keep energy costs low, seal home cracks and gaps and cook dinner outside.

“During the summer months, demand for electricity is at its highest,” said Doug Foley, Vice President of Massachusetts Electric Operations at Eversource.

“We begin preparing for this increased use well before the hot weather arrives by taking steps such as performing maintenance, upgrading equipment, and thoroughly inspecting the electrical system. This way, we can detect and address any potential issues in advance and work to ensure reliable service for our customers during these hot summer days,” he said.

Eversource recommends that customers keep their air conditioners set at a moderate temperature throughout the day.

Wise use of programmable thermostats or temperature timers can keep costs manageable, especially when away from home.

The utility company also asks that customers clean their air conditioner filters and coils at least every three months.

Dirty filters block air flow, reducing efficiency and making it harder to deliver the cool air.

According to Energy Star, setting thermostats just two degrees higher than normal on hot days and using ceiling fans for circulation can lower air conditioning costs by up to 14 percent.
