BOSTON – Eversource is preparing for a major investment in electric vehicle charging ports across Massachusetts.
The company has unveiled plans to launch a $45 million grid modification effort to install thousands of charging units in the Bay State over the next five years.
The company has issued a request for proposal from vendors to deploy the ports at long-term parking lots and fast-charging units along heavily trafficked corridors.
“Our focus will be on locating the new charging stations in places where vehicles are parked for several hours – including businesses, shopping centers and medical offices. The new public charging stations will increase drivers’ confidence that they’ll be able to find a conveniently located one when they need it,” said Eversource Senior Vice President and Chief Customer Officer Penni Conner. “We’re thrilled by the Massachusetts Department of Public Utilities’ recent approval of our proposal to significantly accelerate the deployment of electric vehicle charging infrastructure for our customers.”
The company calls the effort, which will be the largest charging port installation in the country outside of California, “a significant step forward in promoting the adoption of electric vehicles.”
Eversource provides power to Cape Cod and Martha’s Vineyard.
