Eversource to Use Drones to Inspect Power Lines

HYANNIS – Beginning this week, Eversource Energy will utilize drone technology to inspect electric lines in Eastern Massachusetts.

The utility company is focused on getting ahead of any potential issues and the drones will replace helicopters to inspect transmission lines as much as possible.

Eversource Spokesman Mike Durand said the technology has many benefits.

“They are less intrusive. They get up and get closer to the lines than we could ever do with a helicopter,” Durand said. “And we can get them up on nearly a moment’s notice.”

The technology is also safer, more cost-effective and environmentally friendly.

The drones will be used across Eversource’s entire service area.

“We’ll be using those in a lot of hard to reach places,” Durand said.

Drone inspections will also reduce the need for vehicle access in environmentally sensitive areas for inspections.

“In addition to scheduled maintenance, we are going to be able to send the drones up in areas that are either hard to reach or, just because of a storm, are inaccessible,” Durand said.

The drones will be operated by certified personnel.

“We are using a company that specializes in drone technology and line inspection,” Durand said. “The operators are all FAA approved and they will be working across our service territory with us to make sure that we get the information we need.”
