Eversource Urges Customers to Prepare for Storms

PowerlinesBARNSTABLE – The Northeast is in the middle of peak hurricane season and Eversource Energy is stressing the importance of being prepared.

The company is encouraging families and businesses to develop their own plan of action in case of significant storms and long power outages.

“Probably the biggest most important tip as far as individual preparation is to make sure that you have an emergency kit prepared for your home,” said Eversource Energy spokesman Mike Durand.

Durand says other important items to have ahead of storms are food and water, which includes pet food, batteries for flashlights and a battery operated radio.

Durand said even though most lists of items to have are self-explanatory, there is always something on a preparedness list that he hasn’t thought of before.

“Folks should really prepare now and get some things together that they may need if there is a storm related outage,” he said.

“You never know when a storm is going to approach and after the last couple of winters we have had,” he said. “Even when we are through hurricane season, clearly we are not out of the woods.”

Durand said Eversource takes several steps toward being prepared for storms and chief among them is regularly upgrading the power grid.

“As technology improves so does our ability to put equipment in the system that has that advanced technology so we can restore many outages more quickly to larger numbers of customers,” Durand said.

September is National Preparedness Awareness Month.
