BOSTON (AP) — Former Senate President Stan Rosenberg says he has separated from his husband Bryon Hefner.

Rosenberg told reporters Thursday that Hefner is getting treatment for alcohol dependency. He declined to offer details saying it’s a personal matter.

The separation comes amid an ongoing investigation into whether Rosenberg or his staff violated Senate rules in connection with allegations against Hefner.

Several men told The Boston Globe they had been sexually abused by Hefner.

The Amherst Democrat last month stepped aside as Senate president, at least temporarily, as the Senate Ethics Committee conducts its investigation. Worcester Democratic Sen. Harriette Chandler was elected to fill the post during the interim.

Rosenberg said he hasn’t discussed with fellow senators the possibility of returning as president and hasn’t spoken to the legal team conducting the investigation.
