WEST BARNSTABLE – The Exit 5 overpass on Route 6 will be renamed in honor of local first responders.

The state will officially dedicate the bridge that carries Route 149 over the Mid-Cape highway as the “First Responders Appreciation Overpass” in a formal ceremony on May 15 at 2 p.m.

The public is invited to attend.

Representatives from several local police, fire, and EMS departments will be on hand to speak about the service and sacrifice made by first responders. Yarmouth Police Chief Frank Frederickson will lead a moment of silence in honor of slain K9 Sgt. Sean Gannon.

State Senators Julian Cyr (D-Truro) and Vinny deMacedo (R-Plymouth) and State Reps. Tim Whelan (R-Brewster), Will Crocker (R-Centerville), David Vieira (R-Falmouth), Sarah Peake (D-Provincetown), Randy Hunt (R-Sandwich) and Dylan Fernandes (D-Woods Hole) will be in attendance.

“As a united delegation of state legislators, we acknowledge the preparation, training, skills, and bravery exhibited by first responders and we are proud to dedicate this permanent marker of appreciation for them.”

Gov. Charlie Baker signed the change into law last week. Lt. Gov. Karyn Polito will represent the administration at the event.
