Fairhaven Man Faces Jail Time Over Hoax Coast Guard Calls

gavelBOSTON – A Fairhaven man pleaded guilty this week to making hoax distress calls to the Coast Guard.

47-year-old Roger Martin called the Coast Guard three times in April and May of 2015, each time saying his boat was sinking in the Cape Cod Canal. On each occasion, Martin gave watchstanders the names of different Fairhaven residents that he obtained from the Bristol County Sheriff’s dispatch database, where he was previously employed.

Martin pleaded guilty in U.S. District Court in Boston on Wednesday to three counts of sending false distress messages to the U.S. Coast Guard and one count of identity fraud. Sentencing was set for November 22 by District Judge Richard G. Stearns.

Martin could face jail time and fines for placing the fake emergency calls.
