FALMOUTH – The Falmouth Art Center is hosting a Community Conversation on Art and Censorship on Wednesday.
The event is in response to the community’s concern about a recent incident in which artist Salley Mavor was asked to remove political content from a show to be displayed at Highfield Hall and Gardens in Falmouth.
That incident has led to discussion in the community about the roles of artists, art nonprofits and gallery space.
Organizers say that the Community Conversation on Art and Censorship is meant to add constructive conversation to the dialogue.
Among those on the panel will be artist Salley Mavor of Falmouth; Nora Burchfield, who is Executive Director of the New England Quilt Museum in Lowell, Massachusetts; and Dr. Elaine A. King, a part-time Bourne resident who is an art curator, critic, professor and editor. King is co-editor of the book of essays, “Ethics and the Visual Arts.”
Falmouth Art Center Executive Director Laura Reckford will moderate the panel.
“This institution has played an important role in Falmouth’s cultural community since the founding of the Falmouth Artists Guild in 1965. I felt it was appropriate that this space be a place where people can come together to talk about the roles of art and culture in our community,” Reckford said.
