Falmouth Considers Temporary Moratorium on Ground-Mounted Solar

FALMOUTH – Officials in Falmouth are proposing a temporary moratorium on the installation of new ground-mounted solar arrays.

The matter came up at a recent meeting of the town’s planning board, with Chairman Jim Fox suggesting that a suspension of new installations would allow Falmouth to design a more comprehensive bylaw governing design and site planning.

“I’ve looked into the Town of Barnstable and they have a full one page guidelines or site plan for everything to do with solar and it’s pretty straightforward,” he explained.

“They talk about engineering, layout, where it can be in your yard, the whole thing so these things just can’t pop up.”

The plan comes as the town is working to review a number of municipal building and zoning ordinances.

Palmer noted that Falmouth has seen a steady rise in both residential and commercial solar-power projects and a bylaw ought to be developed to ensure that these projects reflect the wants of the community.

A parking lot solar array at Kenyon’s Market caused some concern among residents.
