Falmouth Forum Focuses on Opiate Epidemic

DrugsNORTH FALMOUTH – An all-day forum is underway in Falmouth as the community comes together to discuss the opiate addiction crisis.

The Falmouth Opiate Coalition is putting on the event to spread awareness about the issue and discuss ways to reduce the availability of illegal opiates. Attendees include treatment and medical professionals, pharmacists, prosecutors, and local law enforcement officials.

Today’s forum is underway at the Sea Crest Beach Hotel in North Falmouth. A second event is planned for February 5th.

According to the Falmouth Police Department, there were been 128 recorded overdoses in town in 2015, up 77 percent from 2014.

“You’ve have to not be paying attention to not realize that’s indicative of an issue,” said Falmouth Police Captain Brian Reid.

The group’s mission statement says their goal is “to save lives by mobilizing the community to increase awareness and reduce the availability and misuse of opioid drugs.”

“We, as a police department, are certainly going to do everything within our power to hold people accountable, if you’re involved in the drug trade. If you’re involved in addiction, and you want out, we’ll be here to help you,” Reid said.

The summits are spearheaded by Falmouth Police Chief Ed Dunne and the Falmouth police department.
